Tom Hanks Project – Film #3 – “Bachelor Party” Preview

7 Nov

4-Bachelor-PartyI watched the trailer for “Bachelor Party” with my jaw hanging open. I CAN’T WAIT for this one. From what I can tell, Hanks plays a wildly inappropriate guy whose friends can’t believe he’s getting hitched. He’s marrying a woman from an uptight country club type of family who hate him. His friends figure if he’s gonna get married, they better throw him a wild hooker and booze filled last hurrah of a bachelor party*. This is a side of Hanks I haven’t seen and am dying to. With a tagline like: “Shocking, Shameless, Sinful, Wicked. And the party hasn’t even started,” who wouldn’t be intrigued**?

*Zack’s friends: Put this out of your mind immediately. Andy, you and I have already spoken about this.

**Not exactly the “You’ve Got Mail” Hanks, is it?! I think this movie has the potential to be either really terrible, or really hilarious (or maybe even hilariously terrible).

  • Both Kelly McGillis and Paul Reiser were originally considered for the lead-roles early in production but were replaced due to lack of chemistry between the actors. And this surprised the producers?
  • According to the DVD, this film was inspired by the actual bachelor party thrown for producer Bob Israel. From Bob’s IMDB bio: “Bob has spent his entire life (including in utero) in entertainment.” Oof, Bob.
  • Jim Carrey, Howie Mandel, and Tim Robbins were all considered for the role of Rick. Julia Louis-Dreyfus was considered for the role of Debbie.
  • The sequel to this movie, Bachelor Party 2: The Last Temptation, was made and released (straight-to-DVD) twenty-four years after this original had debuted in 1984.

We plan on watching “Bachelor Party” Sunday morning before football starts and Caitlin heads to Fun Fun Fun Fest. We can either watch the copy I got on VHS for a quarter or the DVD Caitlin got me as part of a 3-pack with “The Man with One Red Shoe” and “That Thing You Do!” Then I’ll spend the next week promising Caitlin my future bachelor party won’t be nearly this wild. We’ll watch it on DVD. He will promise. I know where all of his groomsmen live.

Tom Hanks Press Tour: It took a lot of digging, but this is absolute GOLD. A 1984 interview with Tom on “The Tonight Show” with Joan Rivers.* It’s after “Splash” came out and he’s starting to get bigger and HE’S WEARING A BOLO TIE and is the most adorable ever. Joan grills him about whether he’s married**, because clearly she wants a piece. Who wouldn’t?

*That sentence alone is amazing!

**I looked up which marriage Hanks was in at this point – it was pre-Rita.
